Winter Fishing

Fishing from the ice is a delightful experience that allows you to access fishing waters and places that you otherwise cannot fish at. Ice fishing is usually divided into jigging and ice fishing with set lines. Jigging is primarily conducted for perch and game fish using a jigging equipment and some type of artificial bait. When ice fishing with set lines, it is often aimed for pike or zander, setting up multiple ice fishing lines on the ice that are baited with natural bait, often dead roach.

Proper Clothing for Ice Fishing

For successful winter fishing, it is crucial to dress appropriately. With good fishing clothes, you stay warm and dry all day, allowing you to focus on fishing and having a pleasant day. Dress according to the layering principle and use a pair of lined boots and good fishing gloves, and you will do well.

Ice Safety

Safety is the be-all and end-all in ice fishing. If you fall through the ice, it's crucial to be prepared with the right equipment and knowledge on how to save yourself or your fishing buddy. Ice picks, and a rescue line are a must, but also ice cleats and a drybag with a dry change of clothes are good to have on your fishing trip.

Three Tips for Successful Ice Fishing:

  • Bring plenty of warm food. It's cold being outside all day, and if the fish aren't biting, it's nice to have a hot cup and something tasty to nibble on.
  • Ice fishing becomes both more fun and safer if you go out together, so always try to bring a friend when ice fishing.
  • Enjoy nature! There are not many countries in the world where you can fish in the same waters wearing just a t-shirt in summer and from the ice in winter. Enjoy the beautiful winter landscape and the fantastic fishing that Sweden offers!
