In addition to choosing the right hook model - for example, a single hook, treble hook, offset hook, or circle hook - the hook should be the right size and obviously razor-sharp. Always check the hook regularly throughout the fishing day. If the tip is damaged or dull, sharpen the hook with a whetstone or file. Do not hesitate to replace a defective hook, as it costs so little. Instead, think about how it feels if you lose a fine fish due to a bad hook.

The size is denoted by a number. The higher the number, the smaller the fishing hook. Size 14 is a small hook, 4 is significantly larger. If there is a zero after it, e.g., 2/0, it is even larger. The higher the number before the zero, the larger the hook.
